Spiced poached pears with orange
Pears gently softened in orange and spice, served with coconut yogurt and grated chocolate. An easy pudding that needs no attention.
Made without gluten ingredients. If you avoid gluten strictly, check the labels on: dairy-free dark chocolate.

Method
- This is for a small slow cooker (1.5 to 3.5 litres). In a bigger one, double everything and freeze half. Choose firm pears. Peel them, halve them lengthways and scoop out the cores with a teaspoon. Peel the ginger and slice it thinly.
- Squeeze the juice of the orange into the slow cooker. Add 200 ml of water, the maple syrup, cinnamon and ginger and stir. Lay the pears in cut side down.
- Put the lid on and leave it on. Cook on low for 4 hours or on high for 2 hours, until a knife slides in easily. Check them after 3 hours on low if your pears are ripe, as soft pears cook faster.
- Lift the pears out carefully with a slotted spoon. If you want a thicker syrup, leave the lid off on high for 15 minutes.
- Spoon the pears into bowls with a little syrup and the coconut yogurt. Grate the chocolate over the top.
Tip Firm pears hold their shape best, so avoid very ripe ones. Strain and reduce the poaching liquid in a pan for a quick syrup.
